Well Done Nial!! Go Sinn Fein !!!

Job Done

So sin é - Elections 2011 are over (at least until the by-election in west Béal Feirste next month!)

There's a lot I'd like to and probably should say, but for fear of loosing you, the faithful reader, I will simply thank all of those who placed their trust in me as well as Sinn Féin and decided to elect me to Belfast City Council.

For all candidates the run up to an election is hectic; from one door to another:

"Hello, my name is Niall Ó Donnghaile; I'm the Sinn Féin candidate for the Election on May 5th. I was just wondering if you had a few minutes for a chat or if there are any issues you wish to raise?"

I sometimes wonder am I repeating this mantra in my sleep?

But for all my messing, mantra or not, it paid off in the end!

To polling day itself; after a period of brilliant weather, my 5am rise was greeted with dull and drizzly weather - typical!

As always, we ventured to St Matthews School, awaiting, what we hoped, would be a vast influx of Sinn Féin voters. As the day went on, we weren't disappointed.

Thanks to those who opened up their homes (and fridges and kitchen cupboards) to our activists working hard on the day and allowed us the space to turn their homes into something resembling the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, with people shouting figures across the room, computers wizzing, printers printing and wires galore we were lucky no one tripped!

As polling day progressed, it became clear that some of the Electoral Office staff weren't entirely ofay with what had to be done given the fact that there were three different ballots on the one day - it also became clear that the three papers were causing a lot of confusion, particularly for our older citizens. We stressed with them the need to improve the process of giving people papers, explaining what they to do and allowing them the chance to exercise their vote. After some time the process improved and we are thankful to the staff for their work on the day.

As the evening drew in we were glad to see a rush of people, returning home from university, work, (special mention to the one who came all the way from Kerry!) and other places to cast their votes - it also saw our team swelling as supporters wanted to play their part in what had the potential to be a great victory.

Again Sinn Féin thanks them all and thanks everyone who voted Sinn Féin number one or indeed those who didn't but heeded our message that sometimes a transfer was just as important!

As for the Assembly Count in Newtonards - well that's a blog (or novel!) for another time.

I am delighted to have been elected to represent the people of Pottinger in City Hall; I look forward to working with my fellow Councillors for the area on the issues affecting our people day and daily on the ground.

For too long now many people (including some from the Protestant/Unionist/Loyalist community) felt that having solely Unionist representation for Pottinger was not allowing a voice for many citizens, particularly those in working class inner east Belfast - following this weeks result, one thing is for certain, that is about to change.

As for Béal Feirste over all - Sinn Féin is again the largest party increasing our share of seats under the 'Dome of Delight' from 14 to 16 - many of us were bitterly disappointed (particularly given the year that's in it) not to be welcoming Mary Doyle, former Armagh protesting POW and Hunger Striker, onto the Council with us. Also the loss of Briege Bownlee, herself a former protesting POW, will no doubt be a blow to the people of the lower Falls who will fell the loss of her hard work on Council the most.

I have no doubt that both women will continue to work for our people and ensure a voice for them enters into City Hall next time around.

As for my newly elected and re-elected comrades; I look forward to working with and helping them all over the term of Belfast City Council. Go n-eirí linn!

A few short weeks ago at Easter, I had the tremendous honour and privilege to speak at the Republican monument in the Short Strand, 'An Tine Bheo'.

I spoke about the importance of what An Tine Bheo (The Living Flame) meant for Republicans right across Ireland as we continue to grow and advance our republican project.

For me An Tine Bheo is the legacy left to us by the men and women who have gone before; who struggled, fought, campaigned, protested and died in pursuit of our ultimate objectives. We continue to take our lead, our inspiration, our courage and our determination from them as we pursue a new era of republican struggle.

An Tine Bheo is not bricks or mortar; it is in us; it is of us; and now it shines brighter than ever in Stormont, in Leinster House, Belfast City Hall and in institutions right across Ireland and beyond.

Birmingham City v Celtic TAL Nº 14 1995

Cracking article from TAL Issue 14, 1995 about the clash between Celtic supporters and fascists & hooligans in Birmingham at a pre-season friendly between the clubs. All of our fans who claim to be anti-fascists should read this account of what happened that day. I hope that the GB and the younger CSC lads will read, take note, and learn from this... The role of the CSC that day was crucial, as well as the invaluable help and assistance given by the Birmingham based Celts and anti-fascists.

EYE WITNESS IN BRUM

The pre-season friendly match against Birmingham City (Blues) was marred by the antics of the Blues fans and other supporters of Midlands clubs and their fascist mates who think that the Irish, and they see Celtic fans as very definitely Irish, are easy meat.
It's ironic that this violence should occur in Birmingham where a recent survey found that one in three of the city's population were either Irish or of Irish descent. It therefore follows that Birmingham has three Celtic supporters clubs and many members make regular trips to see the Bhoys. TAL also has huge support within these clubs with a good number of fanzines being sold to the local Celts.
Rumours began to circulate in the weeks before the match that Brum's 'Irish Quarter' in Digbeth was going to be attacked by an alliance of the Blues 'firm' and fascists from the BNP and CIS. Their intended targets would be the Irish pubs in the area and the Celtic fans who would be drinking there.

None of us wanted to see Celtic fans turned over by this mob so we let TAL, Anti-Fascist Action, Red Action and the Celtic Soccer Crew know about the possibilities. An Alliance was formed for the day in order to defend the Digbeth area and our supporters, should it be necessary. Lots of fans had been drinking in Digbeth the previous evening and the locals were well pleased with their friendly behaviour. On the Saturday it was much the same with people enjoying the usual amounts of beer and craic. We had no intention of going looking for trouble but if the rumours were true, we weren't going to sit back and see our supporters battered.

The other thing that is important is that it isn't just the Celtic fans that such attacks are aimed at. Football fans can bounce back from just about anything. The attack would also serve the purpose of intimidating Birmingham's whole Irish community. The Irish in Brum have had to put up with a lot of shit since the pub bombings and have only just begun to come out of their ghettoes again so we were not going to lie down and let this scum walk all over us.

At about 10am, a couple of hundred 'lads' turned the corner. Something told us that they were not interested in sampling the Guinness! They charged us but, much to their surprise and horror, the Celtic fans only hesitated. Our supporters quickly grouped up and counter charged the Blues fans resulting in them being slapped all over the place, which spread a great buzz among the Celts.

Another mob tried to attack us from a side street but, again, they were ran. They then decided to seek refuge behind the lines of police who had quickly appeared and our attackers showed their true colours by Sieg Heiling us and singing their favourite ditty of the moment, "No Surrender to the IRA". All this after being chased off and then hiding behind the cops - what was that about "No Surrender'? The Celtic Casuals answered this with a chant of "BNP - wank, wank, wank!"

This went some way towards letting the black lads from the Birmingham 'Zulus' know that our fight was not against them but against the fascists and loyalists whose intentions are to smash the Irish. Many Celtic fans were surprised to see black guys fighting on the same side as the nazis - why be so shocked that the Zulus should fall for the same anti-Irish crap that is absorbed by most England fans? They weren't giving nazi salutes like the others but they were up for the row and therefore suffered the same fate as their fair weather friends. It's disappointing but hopefully the Zulus will have learned to choose their friends more carefully in future. I remember well in the early eighties how Villa NF supporters used to put stickers around the Holte End saying, "Villa shits on Black Zulus". Yet, against Celtic, the Zulus were prepared to fight on the same side as the Villa fascists!

Some of our own fans were slagging the Celtic Casuals saying that they were only there looking for trouble. We would like to make it clear that these lads were well disciplined throughout the day and, but for them, it would have been a massacre. Instead, Celtic fans fought back and won. And it wasn't just casuals that fought - there were loads of guys wearing the hoops and scarves who steamed into the fascists. We are proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with the casuals who have shown by their recent actions that they are proud to defend the anti-fascist stance of the Celtic supporters. They are republicans and they hate the fascists. They also believe, like us, that the sort of direct action which took place in Birmingham is the best way to stop the fascists.

It's important that all of our supporters recognise that whilst they may not share our militant sentiments, you don't stand and point out people to the police when they have just saved you from having your throat cut! The days of the anti-casual/hooligan chants are long gone. These guys are anti-fascists and should be applauded for their actions in Birmingham.

Celtic Antifascistas TAL Nº 12 (1995)

A very successful benefit social for Celtic Anti-Fascists took place in Glasgow recently with 100 supporters in attendance. The crowd were entertained by the excellent band, Celtic Connection, who played a cracking set which had the bhoys and girls dancing on the tables. Celtic Anti-Fascists have set the example that must be followed by supporters of other clubs if we are to halt the growth of fascism on the football terraces. Events at the recent international match in Dublin between Ireland and England point to the enormity of what lies ahead. The European Championships in England next year are likely to become a showdown not between rival international 'firms' but between the forces of fascism and anti-fascism in Europe, regardless of nationality. At Celtic, we have already begun to build the resistance to racism and fascism.

At the gig, a speaker from Red Action, an organisation that for years has led the anti-fascist resistance, gave a rousing speech. We are proud to reproduce the full text of that speech:

"AFA was set up in 1985. The founding statement was 'to confront the fascists physically and ideologically'. It quickly became apparent that many of its supporters weren't up to it. In 1987 a 2,000 strong AFA march was scattered by a mob of Chelsea Headhunters. In 1989 it was reorganised on more militant lines. There were to be no more easy victories. In 1991 after an encounter, a young Chelsea hooligan confessed: "I have never been so frightened in my life. They ( the Headhunters) told me that Red Action were all old men in sandals and duffle coats!"

In 1992, many central London stations including Waterloo and Charing Cross, 'closed due to riots' as AFA fought running battles with Blood and Honour skinheads and right-wing football casuals. One of the main men at Millwall suffered a heart attack! But importantly, for the first time, many football casuals that day fought on the same side as the anti-fascists. AFA was denounced by the liberal left for its ‘paramilitary tactics'. At the same time many journals on the far-right insisted on 'an IRA connection'. The fact that two of their leading opponents of the late '80's and early '90's were sentenced to a total of 53 years in 1993 for entirely separate IRA/INLA operations, did little, we are informed, to reassure them!

Nor would anybody deny the natural affinity between militant republicanism and militant anti-fascism. Sharing natural enemies causes affinity. The role of Frank Ryan and others in the Spanish civil war is well chronicled, less well known is the vital role played by the IRA in smashing Ireland's own home grown fascists, the 'Blueshirts' during the 1930's. At their high point the Blueshirts claimed a membership of 60,000 - the equivalent of 500,000 in Britain - but due to the attentions of the IRA the high point was brief.

The following description of the events surrounding a Blueshirt meeting in Tralee Co Kerry in 1933 will give you some idea of the IRA's implacable opposition. "The meeting was completely wrecked.... O'Duffy received a nasty head wound when hit by a hammer on his way into the hall.... one hundred delegates were trapped inside by a stone throwing crowd outside. The 200 police present were not able to deal with the crowd outside and it was not until soldiers in full battle kit arrived from Cork that peace be restored. A Mills bomb was thrown through the skylight... but it did not explode as it was caught in the wire netting over the stage. O'Duffy's car was burned by the crowd. The next day an unexploded bomb was found at the back of the hall"

Fascism is anti-working class and anti-democratic. It is a physical force movement. Force must be met with force, violence must be met with counter violence - not pacifism. If, in 1933, other movements in other countries had followed the lead of the IRA, 50 million people would not have died in World War 2.

Today, history repeats itself. In France, the FN are still setting the agenda. In Germany, they have changed the constitution. In Austria, the far-right got 22% of the vote in the national elections in October. In Italy, the far-right are waiting in the wings. Britain too is moving to the right. AFA nationally has helped curb the ambitions of the BNP for the moment, but the fight is far from over.

Labour has turned its back on working class aspirations and announces that it will in future be 'a middle class party for a middle class people'. The far-right intend to fill this void. This they have already achieved at football. To one degree or another nearly all the football firms are right-wing. In 1993, a selection of over 600 turned out to oppose the Bloody Sunday demonstration in London.

Celtic, because of its identification with another tradition, is probably the only club the fascists have never tried to organise. So it is entirely appropriate that Celtic is the first club to organise against them. Up to now the far-right have had a free run at football. The fightback begins here. We appear to be on the way to a united Ireland. The next step is an independent Scotland. The way to achieve it is by a politically independent working class.

TIOCFAIDH AR LA."

CAF endorse the above statement. The choice facing those Celtic fans and republicans who aren't involved in the campaign yet is to either fight the fascists now before it's too late, or accept defeat without striking a blow. There'll be no safe havens for the likes of us.

Orange Bastards

St. Pauli en Glasgow TÁL No. 16 (1996)

75 St Pauli fans from Hamburg visited Glasgow in mid-October as the guests of Celtic AntiFascists and TAL. The weekend was very successful with other fans travelling under their own steam from Hamburg and Berlin. The 75 on the bus from Hamburg also included a group of fans from Rostok in the east, a city with more than its fair share of fascist problems.

As well as attending Celtic's match against Motherwell, the St Pauli fans were made welcome on their first night in Glasgow by members of the Govan Emerald Celtic Supporters Club.

On Saturday, around 500 people attended a party organised by TAL and the South West Support Group which went brilliantly. Celtic Connection and Eire Og supplied the entertainment and The Pollock and Thornliebank Republican Flute Band provided two foot stomping sets of tunes during the festivities. By the time we left the Clada Club, everybody was rat-arsed and happy.

Lots of interest in Celtic Anti-Fascists and TAL was shown by the amount of merchandise that was being snapped up. T-shirts, stickers and information was in great demand.

On Sunday, a challenge match was organised between teams representing the two fanzines, Der Ubersteiger and Tiocfaidh Ar La. Our readers will be delighted to hear that we won our first game against European opposition with a stunning 5-1 victory. The Germans, despite boasts to the contrary before the match, were completely outplayed. Big Sven and Talman donned the managers' jackets but the day belonged to the players on the park.

Some outstanding performances from Gary, the fat midfield general; Gal, our Andy Goram lookalike; our No.7, James, TAL's answer to Paulo Di Canio; and Kidder, our all-shouting, all-screaming, right back, was all we needed to send the St. Pauli team 'homeward to think again...' (or at least to McNee's to get the beers in!)

St. Pauli complained that the referee was a homer (at least thats what I think they called him) and they were demanding a rematch in Hamburg. The only aspect of the referee's handling of the game that might have aroused suspicion was at half-time when he took Kidder aside and advised him to keep his shots low as "...the German keeper is reluctant to dive on the red ash. "

Sunday night: after a great set by the Blarney Pilgrims in McNee's, it was time to move on to The Brazen Head for another glimpse of Eire Og and upstairs to Dirty Nelly's and an impromptu rave that saw St Pauli fans and Celtic fans on top of tables doing all that hands-in-the-air-hippie-trance-dancing to the repetitive beat of shitey music.

A thoroughly successful and enjoyable weekend was had by both the St Pauli and the Celtic fans, united in anti-fascism.

Celtic v Hamburgo 1996 ( TAL Nº 16)

Fascists Can't Stop The Party

Hamburg - Home and Away

Celtic recently played Hamburg SV in the first round of the UEFA Cup. In both games, home and away, we were gubbed 2-0; beaten 4-0 on aggregate. However, most of the excitement took place off the park, as the match became a rallying point for fascists from various parts of northern Germany.

Our friends at St. Pauli (HSV's city rivals) had warned us in advance of the two games, that it was likely that fascists would target the game due to the republican and anti-fascist element among the Celtic support. Also, the fact that there exists a strong rapport between Celtic fans and the anti-fascist St Pauli fans would have been deemed a good enough excuse for the fascists to attack us.

HSV fans have not exactly been idle when it comes to developing links with right-wing elements at other clubs. Just before the matches against Celtic, the main HSV fanzine, "Supporters News", published by the official fan project, ran a four-page article about a trip to Belfast by a group of HSV fans. The article included two pages of photographs under the headline, "Views of Belfast". These "views" consisted entirely of pictures of UVF, UFF and UDA wall murals. The HSV fans' hosts were supporters of Linfield, who aren't exactly noted for their non-sectarianism. This visit and the article have been defended by some HSV fans as an innocent and non-political exchange. If that were the case, then why run a series of pictures alongside the article which by any neutral observer's viewpoint could be construed as indicating support for the pro-British death squads in Ulster?!?

HSV fans already have proven links with Scotland's Shame FC, Chelsea and Linfield fans through the "Blues Brothers" fanzine which carried an article by a well known HSV fan not so long ago. Whilst it has to be pointed out that the HSV fan in question is not a fascist, it was politically naive of him to contribute an article to a fanzine which has right wing leanings as evidenced by the pictures of Chelsea fans with a "Chelsea Loyalists" flag in the same issue.

The "Blues Brothers" fanzine is a piece of toilet paper which has played on the loyalism of Scotland's Shame FC and Linfield fans and has extended its remit to Chelsea's right wing element. The editors deny that they are fascists but a cursory glance at most issues of their fanzine reveals the reality that their base among the supporters of the three clubs is among the right wing, fascist and loyalist element. HSV fans are either being used (as in the case of the previously mentioned contributor) or they are more than happy to be the political associates of loyalists and fascists.

When HSV hooligans came to Glasgow for the first leg of the UEFA Cup tie, their relationship with the worst element of Scotland's Shame FC fans was confirmed. The main "firm" spent most of the day in the notorious loyalist drinking den, The Louden Tavern, a pub frequented by UVF and Red Hand Commando loyalists. Some of the regulars of this pub were featured in the recent "Football, Faith and
Flutes" documentary, cursing everything from Catholics and the Pope to the IRA and Gerry Adams. One of the Louden regulars who was most vociferous was wearing a KKK T-shirt throughout the film.

After drinking all day with such people, the HSV hools then attacked, indiscriminately, Celtic supporters on their way to the game. Before the game, the only people that the HSV hooligans vented their anger on were old men and kids. Throughout the game, it was the hooligans who appeared to be coordinating most of the chanting and singing among the 2000 Hamburg fans. There were a few dodgy looking banners and flags and the obligatory nazi salutes that you would expect from this scum.

After the match about 20 of our casuals, the Celtic Soccer Crew (CSC), confronted about 40 HSV hooligans who were armed with batons and knuckle dusters. In the ensuing fight, one of the HSV mob was stabbed in the stomach. This was enough to unnerve the rest of his mates who took off double-quick. That was the end of round one. Round two followed two weeks later in Hamburg.

More than 4000 Celtic fans made the trip to Hamburg to see what was largely a meaningless game given that we had been roundly beaten at home. The mood among the fans was basically our usual when we go abroad, a good-humoured party atmosphere. Celtic fans have a great reputation at home and abroad for good behaviour but that doesn't mean that we are mugs. If another mob come looking for it, then they'll get it.

Most of the few days in Hamburg was spent drinking with the St Pauli fans. The night before the match, 40 fascists, believed to be from Berlin, attacked the main St Pauli pub, Zum Letzen Pfenig. There weren't that many in the pub and a couple of people got hit by bottles and glasses. The fash disappeared as quickly as they had appeared. A good mob gathered at the pub after the attack but by that time it was too late and the fascists secured a small, albeit temporary, victory.

At the game, the next day, the HSV hooligans had a big mob who taunted the Celtic supporters with chants of "Scotland's Shame FC" and "UDA" and, at one point, burned a tricolour, which provoked attempts by Celtic fans to fight their way through the riot cops to get at the Hamburg fans.

After the game, as we were escorted to the train station, small groups of HSV fans were chanting loyalist slogans at us; "UDA", "UFF" and "UVF". I wonder if their 'friends' in Belfast and Glasgow had anything to do with that?!? The police estimated that about 200 fascists were in and around the St Pauli area after the match. There were several minor skirmishes between the fascists and Celtic supporters on the Reeperbhan.

About 60 fascists again attacked Zum Letzen Pfenni, but this time the St Pauli and Celtic fans were waiting for them and it was the nazis who came off worst. As they approached the pub a big mob came out to meet them and pelted them with bottles and glasses. Some of them were pursued and beaten. Others were confronted on their way out of the vicinity of the pub by anti-fascist supporters who were on their way to give assistance to those in the Letzen Pfennig. One fascist bonehead and a couple of pals passed by a couple of what they thought were unwitting Celtic fans. The bonehead gave it the customary "UDA, UFF" and was beaten to a pulp by the "Psycho Killers", one of whom ended up in jail. It took much negotiations and over £200 in sureties before the German police would release him. Two fascists from Kiel, a strong fascist town about 100 miles away were cited as "independent witnesses" by the police. 30 fascists were arrested and charged by the Hamburg police after their failed attempt to attack the pub after the game.

Anti-Fascist Campaign Launched

Fascist Ultras Not Welcome At Celtic

It was brought to our attention that there have been increasing numbers of Dinamo Zagreb's hooligan gang - the Bad Blue Boys - making visits to Glasgow and following Celtic in Europe in recent seasons. Much of the information available about the Bad Blue Boys suggests that they are predominantly right-wing in political outlook and have an extreme nationalist and Nazi element among their support.

On at least two separate occasions over the years the BBB have attacked our anti-fascist friends from St Pauli at Celtic's European matches (in Zagreb and Budapest). The attacks were politically motivated. The BBB know St Pauli's anti-fascist reputation and attacked them because of it.

Unfortunately, some misguided Celtic fans have indulged right-wing members of this group and made them welcome at our ground and in our pubs. This season saw a banner raised inside Celtic Park in solidarity with Dinamo fans who are in dispute with their obnoxious right-wing chairman. While we can identify with any fan of any club who is dissatisfied with the way that their club is run, we do not believe that it is in the interests of Celtic fans or Celtic FC for our fans to make any kind of public solidarity with the Bad Blue Boys as long as the BBB is embarrassed by this extreme nationalist and Nazi element. We do not want friendships or anything to do with fascist elements within the BBB, that is any BBB who still have anything to do with fascism, Nazism and extreme nationalism. BBB who have nothing to do with fascism and extreme nationalism are welcome, as are the individual anti-fascist supporters of any club.

This anti-fascist principle applies equally to any ultras group at any other club with a fascist element still prominent in its stands and terraces.

Celtic Fans Against Fascism want to see a change in the situation at Dinamo Zagreb and other clubs with a problematic fascist element. We offer our support and solidarity to anti-fascists among the BBB. We would welcome dialogue with anti-Nazis at Dinamo. All who oppose racism and fascism are welcome at Celtic Park.

We have decided to launch a campaign among Celtic supporters aimed at educating them as to the political nature of various ultras (the BBB being one example only) and mobilising Celtic fans against fascists and extreme nationalists who may try to attach themselves to our club.

Many groups on the extreme right in Europe will identify themselves as our ‘friends’ with Papal flags and friendly talk about the Irish struggle, don’t be fooled by it. Make sure that you know the politics of any group who would attach themselves to our club. ALL racists and fascists should be booted out of Celtic Park.
